Create your own sterling silver jewellery. Join Dunedin jeweller Zantedeschia Robini, a professional with over 20 years of experience, in this hands-on lost Mitsuro Hikime jewellery making workshop.
Mitsuro Hikime roughly translates to honey (mitsu) wax (ro) drawing (hiki) texture (me).
Mitsuro Hikime is a unique blended wax, an ancient art form, dating back more than 1300 years in Japan. It was mostly used in sculpture, later enjoyed by jewellery artists and jewellery lovers in some parts of Japan.
Lost wax casting is a well-known process in the jewelry industry, but Mitsuro Hikime is unique because it must be warmed slowly with your hands to become malleable. After pulling, stretching, and folding the wax into itself, it forms unique striations.
The beauty of Mitsuro Hikime lies in its unpredictable nature: no two pieces are ever the same. The technique captures the artist’s movements and the natural properties of the wax, resulting in organic and fluid designs. This makes each piece of jewellery a true work of art, with its own character and history. This mesmerising wax process allows you to create beautifully flowing sculptural forms with a distinctly organic texture.
You will learn how to use Mitsuro wax to create beautifully unique and individual jewelry. Working with Mitsuro Hikime will open up many possibilities to create a one-off piece or start a new collection.
Basic methods of model production
Form the signature striated texture.
Create forms
Shape your own wax for rings, earrings, or pendants.
Techniques in wax
Create organic and irregular shapes, interesting textures, spontaneous shapes, and surface effects.
Design
Learn composition and preparation of your wax. Master the technique of pulling, stretching, twisting, and manipulation to combine the lines and curves that Mitsuro Hikime can create.
Troubleshooting
Tips and tricks for better results.
Suitable for the absolute beginner or jeweller who hasn't ventured into Mitsuro Hikime wax work before, or advanced students who wish to improve upon pre-existing skills
What’s Included
Use of all tools and safety equipment.
Wax for creating your ring design.
Sterling silver (up to 10 grams per piece).
Note: You are welcome to work bigger than 10 grams per piece. There will be an additional charge for casting materials over 10 grams.I will be able to guide you through this on the day.
Casting and finishing of your piece.
Final product mailed to your address in a gift box.
Optional: Upgrade to gold/gold plate.
Oxidized finishes: $ 25.00 per piece.
Important Details
This is a hands-on class full of learning and laughing. You’ll have the opportunity to produce something truly unique.
In this introductory workshop – you’ll create your wax model, which will then be professionally cast and polished. You won’t be melting/pouring metal on the day.
The workspace is well-ventilated, but you’ll be working with hot tools and mild fumes. Please tie back long hair. Bring your glasses if you wear them.
We will be focusing on ring making but please don’t feel limited to just rings.
For necklaces: a 45cm curb chain is included with the option to upgrade the length.
For earrings: a set of 10mm silver hoops or handmade hooks are included. (excludes studs)
