Mitsuro Hikime Jewellery Workshop with Zantedeschia Robini

Create your own sterling silver jewellery. Join Dunedin jeweller Zantedeschia Robini, a professional with over 20 years of experience, in this hands-on lost Mitsuro Hikime jewellery making workshop.

Mitsuro Hikime roughly translates to honey (mitsu) wax (ro) drawing (hiki) texture (me).

Mitsuro Hikime is a unique blended wax, an ancient art form, dating back more than 1300 years in Japan. It was mostly used in sculpture, later enjoyed by jewellery artists and jewellery lovers in some parts of Japan.

Lost wax casting is a well-known process in the jewelry industry, but Mitsuro Hikime is unique because it must be warmed slowly with your hands to become malleable. After pulling, stretching, and folding the wax into itself, it forms unique striations.

Introduction to tetra pak printing with Kyla Cresswell,

You will be working with soy based etching inks on recycled tetra pak plate to produce intaglio prints (like drypoint with a twist). They will be hand printed by you on a small etching press. This is a magical way to turn your recycling into something beautiful.

The etching press is small, the plates we are making the image on are 100 x 150mm. However this will mean you can likely make more than one image. It is all about experimenting and learning, so really don’t feel like you need to come with anything other than curiosity!
