Katazome - rice paste resist printing on textiles series with Kate Watts- from 3rd November

from $30.00

Monday 10th November morning - paste making demonstration
Monday 10th November afternoon - stencil cutting
Tuesday 11th November morning - applying rice paste resist to textiles
Wednesday 12th November morning or afternoon- dye mixing and application

Katazome is a historic japanese method of dyeing fabrics using a rice paste resist applied through a stencil. The paste prevents the dye from penetrating the fabric, leaving a crisp, patterned design after the paste is washed away. After the paste has dried dye would traditionally be applied to the fabric via hand painting over the top, or via immersion in an indigo dye bath.

Over this 3 day course you will be able to dip in and out and sample the techniques that are of interest to you for your textile practice, or just come and have fun and have a play with something new!

If the times and days don’t suit get in touch and I’ll see if I can schedule another series.

Monday 10th November -
9.30am - 12.30pm - On the first day we will cover making the rice paste resist, which is a process that takes a couple of hours. While we are waiting for the paste to steam we will be making up our manutex, which is a seaweed based paste which can be used to thicken procion dyes which you can then use to paint or screenprint cellulose based textiles. This session is mostly a demonstration and an overview of the Katazome process.

1-4 pm - Stencil cutting workshop - we will design and cut stencils suitable for printing our rice paste resist

Tueday 11th November - Applying rice paste resist workshop, 2 people at a time, 9.30-10.30 (may run over) or 10.30 - 11.30 (may run over).
